Jujube Fruit…. Superfood

When Eva from Trethowan Organic Farm asked me to taste a Jujube fruit a few weeks ago, I wasn’t impressed with this odd tree fruit. She was raving about this “superfood fruit”. But I was determined to keep an open mind about the new fruit. Yesterday, she was talking to a customer again about this fruit available at her booth and she convinced me to try again, so I went home with a little container of Jujube Fruits.

After biting into a couple of these jujubes it was obvious that I hadn’t given this unusual fruit a fair taste test and since I ate most of them I have to confess that I’ve been converted and am now a big fan of the jujube, and love the unique taste of this uncommon fruit. This is now one of my favorite snack!

The jujubes are about the size of a large walnut but look like olives and the flesh is crisp and apple like in texture. ..an unusual taste and flavor. Hard to describe.

For your information The Jujube is also called  Red Date, or Chinese. The immature fruit is smooth-green, and resembles the consistency and taste of an apple, but as it matures more, it darkens to red to purplish-black and becomes wrinkled, looking like a small date (see why we call it  Chinese Date).

Amazingly, Jujube is one of the worlds oldest fruits, used in Chinese medicine for 4000 years.

Today, the Jujube Fruit is as popular in China as the apple is in the United States.

Jujube contains heavy concentrations of niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and two forms of vitamin A. Jujube contains 100 times more vitamin C than apples and 20 times more than citrus fruits , Jujube contains the minerals calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zink . Jujube contains and array of phenols and nine bioflavonoids, which support vascular function and cellular health . Jujube contains 18 of the 24 amino acids humans need to live.
